Rivers Shakes As PDP Backs Fubara, Relegates Wike’s Influence

By Sarki khabeer

In a landmark decision, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State. This decision underscores the party’s commitment to fostering unity and ensuring seamless coordination in one of its most pivotal strongholds.

Addressing the press after the NWC meeting, the National Treasurer of the party, Mr. Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, emphasized the committee’s unequivocal support for Governor Fubara. He stated, “We stand firmly behind Governor Fubara as the party leader in Rivers State, and we believe his leadership will bring further stability and growth to the party in the region.” This development has sparked discussions in political circles, with many viewing it as a subtle redefinition of power dynamics within the PDP in Rivers State. Notably, former Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been a dominant figure in Rivers politics for years. Observers believe this decision might signify a shift in the party’s approach to governance and leadership, aiming to give the incumbent governor the full reins of authority. The move is seen as a strategic step by the PDP to solidify its base in Rivers State ahead of future elections. Political analysts have lauded the decision, describing it as necessary for resolving internal party disputes and aligning efforts for effective governance.

Governor Fubara, who took office in May 2023, has gradually carved a niche for himself as a leader committed to continuity and development. His administration has focused on infrastructural growth, youth empowerment, and security, earning him growing admiration among party members and residents alike. In a subtle response to the NWC’s decision, Governor Fubara assured the party of his unwavering commitment to unity and progress. “Rivers State remains a stronghold of the PDP, and under my leadership, we will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people while ensuring our party remains formidable,” he said. While the party is presenting a united front, questions linger about the political future of former Governor Wike and his influence within the PDP. However, party insiders believe the reaffirmation of Fubara is a signal to all members that the PDP prioritizes institutional harmony over individual ambitions.

This decision by the NWC highlights the PDP’s dedication to strengthening its structures and reasserting its dominance in Rivers State politics. It also serves as a reminder of the party’s broader mission to present a united front amidst the dynamic and often contentious political landscape in Nigeria. Statement from the PDP National Treasurer “We are confident in the leadership of Governor Fubara and his capacity to guide the PDP in Rivers State to greater heights. Our decision today is a testament to the trust we have in his leadership,” said Mr. Yayari Ahmed Mohammed.

FG Approves N4bn Cash Transfer To Ease Hardship For Vulnerable Nigerians

0

By Jabir Yakubu

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved ₦4 billion for conditional cash transfers to support vulnerable households across the country. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwada, targets at least 10 million displaced and struggling families nationwide, with a special focus on those in the conflict-ridden Northeast. Set to commence in February and continue through April, the program will provide direct financial relief to households severely impacted by displacement, economic hardship, and insecurity. Internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and other vulnerable groups have been prioritized as beneficiaries.

The Federal Government has also allocated an additional ₦2 billion for interest-free loans to farmers in rural areas. These loans, ranging between ₦300,000 and ₦400,000 per household, aim to enhance food security by enabling farmers to purchase necessary tools, seeds, and fertilizers, while creating access to market opportunities for their produce. Professor Yilwada described the program as a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to alleviate poverty and reduce the socio-economic challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. “This program is a testament to our unwavering commitment to uplifting the vulnerable and addressing the root causes of poverty in Nigeria,” the Minister said while unveiling the initiative. The cash transfer program is modeled on global examples, such as Brazil’s Bolsa Família and India’s Direct Benefit Transfer programs, both of which have significantly improved household welfare and reduced poverty. Experts argue that Nigeria’s version, if properly implemented, could achieve similar success by stimulating local economies and empowering beneficiaries.

This intervention comes amid growing public concerns over the removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent rise in inflation. While commending the government for its proactive approach, civil society organizations have urged transparency in disbursing the funds to ensure they reach those most in need. As the rollout approaches, citizens remain optimistic that the initiative will not only provide immediate relief but also create pathways for economic recovery and stability for Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations. “The FG’s cash transfer program is not just a response to hardship; it is a beacon of hope for millions seeking a better future,” the Minister concluded, reiterating the government’s resolve to prioritize social welfare initiatives.
