FG Restores 16 Years as Minimum Age for University Admissions

0

By Sarki Kabir

The Federal Government has officially reinstated 16 years as the minimum age for admission into Nigerian universities. This decision, announced by the Honorable Minister of Education, Morufu Tunji Alausa, has reversed the controversial policy introduced in July 2024 by his predecessor, Tahir Mamman, which raised the minimum age to 18. Explaining the rationale behind this move, Alausa emphasized that the previous policy had unintended consequences, including a significant rise in the number of out-of-school children. “We cannot allow rigid policies to deprive brilliant young Nigerians of the opportunity to pursue higher education. This change aligns with global standards and ensures inclusivity in our education system,” he stated.

The former policy, implemented in a bid to address perceived maturity and readiness issues among university students, faced backlash from various stakeholders, including parents, educators, and civil society groups, who argued that it unfairly delayed the academic progression of many students. With the reinstatement of the 16-year minimum age, education experts and advocates have lauded the government for taking swift action to rectify the policy and prioritize access to education.

This decision is expected to alleviate the pressures faced by young Nigerians eager to advance their studies and contribute to reducing the alarming out-of-school statistics in the country, which is among the highest globally.By restoring the original age requirement, the Federal Government has signaled its commitment to fostering an inclusive and adaptable education system that empowers young minds without unnecessary barriers.

Mystery and Power Play: Afe Babalola Drops Defamation Suit Against Dele Farotimi

By Abbashe Ck

In a move that has sparked both relief and controversy, renowned legal icon Aare Afe Babalola SAN has officially withdrawn his N500 million defamation lawsuit against activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi. This decision, announced during a meeting at Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, followed the intervention of prominent figures, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Bishop Matthew Kukah, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

The case stemmed from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where the activist allegedly made statements that Babalola claimed were false and damaging to his reputation. Initially, Babalola sought not only financial damages but also requested the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to revoke Farotimi’s law license. The LPDC dismissed the petition, advising that such grievances be handled in court. Babalola, at one point, demanded that Farotimi retract his not-guilty plea and issue a public apology in major newspapers before he would consider withdrawing the case. However, Farotimi did neither, and no public retraction or apology has been issued. Yet, Babalola ultimately chose to withdraw the case after high-level interventions. Nigerians, however, are left in the dark regarding the truth of Farotimi’s allegations. This unresolved controversy raises critical questions about freedom of information, especially concerning sensitive issues that touch on public trust and accountability. With the case now buried, there is a growing concern that the allegations made by Farotimi might be swept under the carpet, leaving citizens with no answers and fostering an atmosphere of speculation and mistrust.

The saga highlights the delicate balance between freedom of speech and the right to protect one’s reputation. It also underscores the urgent need for transparency in addressing allegations that hold potential implications for society. Nigerians deserve not just the freedom to express their views but also access to information that helps them understand and navigate issues of public interest. While the withdrawal of the lawsuit might signal peace between the two parties, it does little to answer the burning questions raised by this case. The public is now left to wonder whether this resolution is justice served—or justice denied.

Mid-Air Chaos: United Airlines Flight From Nigeria Makes Emergency Return

Passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 613 experienced moments of terror as the aircraft encountered sudden and violent movement mid-air while flying over Ivory Coast airspace. The Lagos-to-Washington, D.C. flight, which took off on January 27, 2025, was forced to make an emergency return to Lagos after the incident left several passengers and crew members injured.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since launched an investigation into the alarming occurrence, describing it as a case of “unexpected aircraft movement.” Eyewitness accounts from passengers reveal that the turbulence was so severe that it sent some travelers out of their seats, with luggage spilling into the aisles.

One passenger, Adebola Iweala, recounted the harrowing moments: “It felt like the plane dropped suddenly. People were screaming, and I saw the flight attendants trying to help those who fell. It was a nightmare.”

The injured individuals, whose conditions remain undisclosed, received medical attention upon the plane’s safe return to Lagos. United Airlines expressed regret over the incident and promised full cooperation with the NTSB investigation. In a statement, the airline assured passengers of its commitment to safety, stating: “We are deeply sorry for the distress caused to our customers and crew. Safety remains our utmost priority, and we will work closely with investigators to determine the cause.”

The NTSB has announced that a preliminary report on the incident will be released within 30 days. Aviation experts speculate that factors such as severe turbulence or mechanical failure may have contributed to the unexpected flight disturbance. The incident has sparked renewed discussions about aviation safety, with many calling for stricter adherence to safety protocols and real-time weather monitoring during long-haul flights.

For the passengers of Flight 613, it was a journey that took an unexpected and frightening turn. While the plane landed safely, the experience serves as a chilling reminder of the unpredictability of air travel.

The political heartbeat of Abuja is set to quicken as the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) rolls out the red carpet for a highly anticipated gathering celebrating Asiwaju’s Grassroot Team. Scheduled to take place on February 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM, the event will be hosted at the TSG Campaign Office, 2 Kainji Crescent, off Lake Chad, Maitama, Abuja, drawing together some of the most influential grassroots mobilizers and political strategists in the country.

This celebration comes at a time when the political climate is gradually building momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with party loyalists and supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu setting the stage for another decisive political battle. The Tinubu Support Group, known for its unwavering loyalty and instrumental role in the previous electoral victory, is once again mobilizing its base, reinforcing its structures, and ensuring that the grassroots, which proved vital in the 2023 elections, remains the stronghold of the Tinubu movement.

Political watchers see this event as more than just a gathering of like-minded supporters; they see it as a strategic assembly of the key figures who have been instrumental in the electoral successes of the ruling party. The grassroots team, often described as the backbone of Tinubu’s political machinery, is expected to use this platform to assess past successes, realign strategies, and re-energize its supporters ahead of what many anticipate to be another critical electoral season. It is also expected that discussions will revolve around consolidating the gains of the present administration, ensuring that Tinubu’s policies continue to resonate with the people at the grassroots level, and countering opposition narratives that seek to undermine the achievements of the current government. Sources within the organization suggest that this gathering will bring together party stakeholders, youth mobilizers, women leaders, and influential figures who have remained steadfast in their commitment to the Tinubu agenda. There is a palpable sense of excitement within the political circles in Abuja, as expectations rise over the possible unveiling of new strategies and initiatives aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots outreach.

Dr. Umar Tanko Yakasai, a key figure in the event’s organization, has confirmed that the celebration is strictly by invitation, ensuring that only those with a strategic role to play in the movement will be in attendance. For further inquiries,
